If it’s true that simplicity is the ultimate luxury, then La Solution 10 de Chanel is the latest innovation in the skincare department. Taking the complex science that beauty is to an essential level, La Solution 10 features only ten ingredients that work their magic on (naturally or temporary) sensitive skin offering a multitasking soothing moisturizer that - other than being extremely well tolerated, luxurious and pleasant altogether - fights the stress and defends the skin.
Truth to be told, behind such ostensible simplicity there is a lot of research, there is Chanel’s vision in anticipating women’s needs and there is the work of over 200 scientists that, before coming up with the unique La Solution 10 formula, tested 117 others. But why are we talking about "solution”? Well, aren’t we always looking for that cream that can solve our problems? It seems that chez Chanel they read our minds but, actually, it’s all a matter of research. Sensitive skin is a growing phenom (more than 50% of women declares to suffer from it), it’s not a kind of skin, is a condition caused by our hectic lifestyle. Our skin, indeed, overreacts to cumulative stress (pollution, travel, hormonal changes, emotional or physical stress, lack of sleep, sun exposure, overscrubbing - I bet you can recognize at least one of those as yours) showing signs as redness and roughness, tight, stinging sensations and lack of comfort. Chanel Research identified that there is a very mechanism to address for sensitive skin and it consists in the reinforcement of the skin barrier function, in the neutralization of the oxidative stress and in regulating the skin nervous system. To do all that they saw a starting point in the quintessence of the Silver Needle Tea, an extremely rare Chinese-grown variety of white tea with high concentration of teanine and polyphenols that has this triple power of soothing, de-stressing and defending. Once they found it, they integrated it in a very simple and handcrafted formulation with the right balance of tolerance, sensoriality and efficacy (check out the interview below to know more about it).

- La Solution 10 de Chanel, why did you decide for 10 ingredients?
You know, for sensitive skin less is more and is this philosophy that we wanted to apply to this kind of product, we wanted to target the essential, to make a pure formula. Dr. Wechsler and Chanel Research and Technology team were proposing a formula with around 8 and 15 ingredients and at the end they saw that 10 was the right number for the right balance. It was extremely difficult but “less is more” is so relevant for sensitive skin and it also is for Chanel’s spirit.
- You are selling La Solution 10 as a moisturizer but the Silver Needle Tea extract is in charge of soothing, de-stressing and defending. Which ingredients act as a moisturizers?
Water, Vegetal Squalane, Glycerine, Shea Butter they were all selected to bring comfort and to nourish, they are able to bring some specific lipids into the skin and to fix the water inside it. Most of them are natural ingredients that you can find in your skin and that is why they can bring an immediate comfort to it. It was interesting to study this affinity. The Silver Needle Extract, on the counterpart, brings a long term effect that you can see after one week of use and the more you keep using it the more you will see the difference. It is an active formula, all the ingredients were selected because they have a specific role to soothe, to moisturize and to nourish the skin.
- How do you introduce La Solution 10 in your beauty routine and how do you use it? As a serum, before the cream, after…?
It’s a good question, it really depends on the skin and on the beauty routine. Basically it is a cream, it has a creamy texture even if it’s so comfortable and lightweight. It’s not an anti-aging product so of course you can combine it with your regular skincare for a more targeted result. It’s really up to you. For example in the morning if you feel it is comfortable enough you can use it on its own or after a serum, otherwise you can add a nourishing cream. In the night I suggest to pair it with an anti-aging beauty routine because of the chronobiology of the skin. It’s a little as you want but what is sure is that this product can be combined: it depends on what you feel, on your needs and on the moment of the year, because sometimes you can just use it as a cure or you can add it to your beauty routine in a long-term way as a daily moisturizer.
- So, if I use it after a serum all the actives are going to sink into my skin either way?
Absolutely.
- Let’s talk about the texture. How can a moisturizer be so lightweight?
This was a huge challenge and that’s why the selection of the active ingredients was so important. At Chanel Research when you speak about the art of formulation the first step is to select the right active ingredient that will bring the right effect to the skin, but after you have to find the right concentration of it. This is what was so difficult, to find the right concentration of each ingredient to obtain this formula that is extremely nourishing but at the end is extremely light with no sticky or greasy feeling.
- Well isn’t it a work of art?
Yes, in this case we speak of handcrafted formulas. You can really compare the textures to different fabrics.
- Will you keep La Solution 10 as a single product or you will create a range out of it?
It’s a good question. It’s a secret but we would like to work on other products to help women with sensitive skin to have a dedicated beauty routine. I don’t know if it will be a range, I don’t know how many products, but it’s definitely something we are working on, we would like to do it.
- Your ultimate suggestion to have a flawless skin.
Cleansing is the key step but when you have sensitive skin what you can do is perhaps not to clean your skin twice a day but only in the evening to remove all the makeup and the impurities. You can skip cleansing in the morning, if you feel like it’s too harsh for your skin. Then follow the routine cleanse-moisturize-protect. Remember, protecting from UV rays is the only way you have to preserve your beauty capital.

Una soluzione ai nostri problemi, neanche chez Chanel leggessero le nostre menti, a quello stress cumulativo che fa reagire la nostra pelle evidenziando segni come arrossamenti, secchezza e rugosità o fastidiose sensazioni di stiramento, pizzicore e calore. Alla base di questo fenomeno di inarrestabile sensibilità, la Ricerca Chanel ha identificato un meccanismo biologico che incrimina lo stress ossidativo, l’alterazione della barriera cutanea e lo stress cellulare. Per far fronte a ciò ha selezionato come ingrediente chiave il Silver Needle Tea, una rarissima varietà di tè bianco cinese con un’alta concentrazione di teanina e polifenoli che ha un triplice potere anti-stress, di difesa e lenitivo per combattere, rispettivamente, tutti i fattori incriminabili appena elencati.
Questo è stato il primo passo. Poi hanno dovuto integrare l’attivo chiave del Silver Needle Tea in una formulazione semplice, spogliata del superfluo, eppure efficace, fatta di sottili equilibri, di giuste concentrazioni, di piccoli aggiustamenti di viscosità e di stabilità per arrivare a una formulazione artigianale con il giusto equilibrio di tolleranza, sensorialità ed efficacia.

E non credo di essere l'unica: la formula è stata testata in tutto il mondo in ambienti diversi, su donne diverse e anche dopo microdermoabrasioni e ha sempre, dico sempre, diminuito in modo significativo tutti i segni della pelle sensibile senza deludere mai nessuno.

Dopo la più che esaustiva presentazione da lei tenuta ho avuto l’occasione di porle qualche domanda e, fidatevi, non è stato facile trovarne qualcuna a cui lei non avesse gia risposto!
- La Solution 10 de Chanel, perché 10 ingredienti?
Quando si parla di pelle sensibile less is more ed è proprio questa la filosofia che abbiamo voluto applicare a questo tipo di prodotto, abbiamo voluto puntare all'essenziale per fare una formula pura. La Dott.ssa Wechsler e il team della Ricerca Chanel avevano proposto una formula con circa 8-15 ingredienti e alla fine, prova dopo prova, hanno visto che 10 era il numero giusto per l’equilibrio perfetto. È stato estremamente difficile, ma "less is more" è un punto essenziale per la pelle sensibile cosi come lo è per lo spirito Chanel.
- Definite La Solution 10 de Chanel una crema idratante, eppure l'estratto di Silver Needle Tea è responsabile del potere lenitivo, difensivo e anti-stress. Quali sono gli ingredienti che agiscono da idratanti?
Acqua, Squalene Vegetale, Glicerina e Burro di Karitè sono stati tutti selezionati per donare confort e per nutrire, sono in grado di portare alcuni lipidi specifici nella pelle e di fissare l'acqua al suo interno. La maggior parte di essi sono ingredienti che si possono trovare nell’epidermide ed è per questo che sono in grado di apportare un comfort così immediato. È stato interessante studiare queste affinità. Dal canto suo, l’estratto di Silver Needle Tea è responsabile di un effetto più a lungo termine che si inizia a vedere dopo una settimana di uso e che si rafforza giorno dopo girono. Si tratta di una formula attiva, tutti gli ingredienti sono stati selezionati perché hanno un ruolo specifico per lenire, idratare e nutrire la pelle.
- Come si può introdurre La Solution 10 nella routine di bellezza e come la si può usare? Come un siero, prima della crema, dopo...?
È una buona domanda, in realtà dipende tutto dalla pelle e dalla routine di bellezza. Fondamentalmente si tratta di una crema, ha una consistenza cremosa anche se è così confortevole e leggera. Non è un prodotto anti-aging quindi si può combinare con la vostra usuale routine per un risultato più mirato. Dipende da voi. Per esempio, al mattino, se si sente che è abbastanza confortevole la si può utilizzare da sola o dopo il siero, altrimenti è possibile aggiungere una crema nutriente. La sera, vi suggerisco invece di abbinarla a una routine anti-aging che, grazie alla cronobiologia della pelle, funziona meglio di notte. È soggettivo ma ciò che è certo è che La Solution 10 può essere combinata, dipende da come ci si sente, delle esigenze e dal momento dell'anno, perché a volte si può semplicemente utilizzarla come una cura o la si può aggiungere a lungo termine come una crema idratante quotidiana.
- Quindi, se la uso dopo il siero tutti i principi attivi riescono ad essere assorbiti dalla pelle?
Assolutamente.
- Parliamo della texture. Come può una crema idratante essere così leggera?
Questa è stata la vera sfida e per questo la selezione dei principi attivi è così importante. Al Centro di Ricerca Chanel quando si parla di arte della formulazione il primo passo è quello di selezionare il principio attivo mirato per l’obiettivo stabilito, dopodiché si deve trovare la sua giusta concentrazione. È stato questo il passo più difficile, trovare la giusta concentrazione di ogni ingrediente per ottenere una formula che fosse sia estremamente nutriente sia estremamente leggera e che non lasciasse la pelle appiccicosa o unta.
- È quasi un'opera d'arte.
Sì, in questo caso parliamo di formule artigianali. Si possono addirittura confrontare le texture delle creme con i tessuti.
- Volete mantenere La Solution 10 come singolo prodotto o è solo l’inizio di una linea completa?
È un’ottima domanda. È anche un segreto… Ma ci piacerebbe lavorare su altri prodotti per aiutare le donne con la pelle sensibile ad avere una routine di bellezza dedicata. Non so se sarà una linea completa, non so quanti prodotti, ma è sicuramente qualcosa su cui stiamo lavorando, ci piacerebbe farlo.
- Il tuo suggerimento per avere una pelle perfetta?
La pulizia è il passo fondamentale, ma quando si ha la pelle sensibile si può lavare il viso solo la sera per rimuovere tutto il trucco e le impurità. È possibile saltare la pulizia del mattino se risulta troppo aggressiva. Poi, assolutamente, seguire la routine di pulizia-idratazione-protezione. Ricordate, la protezione dai raggi UV è l'unico modo per preservare il vostro capitale di bellezza.
